First Blog post Art F200X Gwyneth O'Rourke

Introduction paragraph:

Hello! My Name is Gwyneth O'Rourke, and I am a freshman at the University of Alaska Fairbanks! I grew up in Denver, Colorado. I have always been a huge sports fan; I skated my whole life, played lacrosse, and competitively swam all through high school. I am a huge Liverpool, Avalanche, Nuggets and Eagles fan. I am majoring in Homeland Security and Emergency Services with a concentration in Fire Administration and a minor in Fire Science. I plan to attend the University's fire academy next summer and start my career as a firefighter.

Favorite piece of art:

The Execution of Lady Jane Grey by Paul Delaroche

My relationship with art:
Honestly, I have never really had a relationship with art. I love looking at art and art museums and seeing the stories behind paintings and their history, but I have never been "good" at doing art, so my love of art stops with looking at it. My favorite thing to do when I travel is to find an art museum in every country and see how the art differs between cultures. However, The Execution of Lady Jane Grey has always remained my favorite. You can feel all the emotions in the painting; you can feel her fear, sadness, and innocence. The use of colors and details is unmatchable. I have yet to see a painting that has affected me as much as this one.

  1. Lady Jane Grey really got shafted. You can talk more about your favorite painting in the module - Romantic Era.

  2. Hi Gwyneth! I too was a swimmer in high school. I was on the varsity team for 3 yrs. I loved it! I also tend to look for art museums any time I travel to a new town, as i like to see how different the art is in every location.

  3. That's a really good choice of painting! I really love paintings that can convey complex emotions through the brush alone, one of my favorites is "Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan" by Ilya Repin.

  4. Hi, Gwyneth! I am very impressed with your career path and find that very interesting! I, too, am not an artist and never have felt "good" at art, so my relationship is also limited. I love that you try to choose an art museum in each place you visit so you can compare the art of those areas. This inspires me to do the same now!

  5. I love playing sports, especially basketball. I played in high school and still play whenever I have free time. I often play pick-up games at the park. The art piece you chose also had a strong effect on me. I felt the subject's sadness and fear as she was about to be executed. I hope to see that painting in person someday. Great blog!
